Hi, I’m Sarah.
I’m interested in so many things - faces, places, buildings, literature, textiles, travel, music, machines. As an artist I love learning about new things, and using them as inspiration for my next drawing. Colour is central to my work - I fill my illustrations with colour, but there is a balance and harmony between them.
I create my work first by drawing with a calligraphy brush and Indian ink in Payne’s Grey. Then I layer textured washes of colour and brushwork. I strive to create a boldness and energy combined with an elegance and element of restraint.
I have recently begun to animate my illustrations using a stop frame animation technique of 12 or 8 frames per second, each drawn by hand. It’s a deliberately loose and sketchy way to animate in keeping with the rest of my illustrations.
I also love printmaking, and use spare hours to make linocuts, usually focussed on textures, patterns and vernacular architecture.
I won a D&AD New Blood Award when I graduated.
I have two young sons.
I’m also a musician. I play the drums and sing, layer harmonies and polyrhythms.
